Bill Callahan's 1999 album under the Smog name arrives with string quartet and children's choir in tow, arrangements that could tip mawkish but instead land oddly plainspoken. The strings on 'Held' feel less like embellishment than part of the furniture. Callahan's baritone moves through these songs at walking pace, circling loneliness and distance without making a show of either.

Tracks like 'Cold Blooded Old Times' and 'Let's Move To The Country' sketch small scenes: a car, a kitchen, a stretch of road. The production stays sparse even when the choir appears, voices doubling the melody rather than swelling beneath it. It is patient music, built around repetition and space rather than hooks. 'River Guard' barely moves for three minutes. That restraint suits the writing, which tends toward plain statement over metaphor.

This sits with Red House Painters and early Iron & Wine for listeners after slow, inward folk rock that does not flinch from stillness. The Drag City reissue offers the original mix in lossless formats alongside vinyl and tape, worth having if you already know you want three minutes of Callahan singing the same two lines about a teenage spaceship.

Bill Callahan's 1999 slowcore landmark pairs baritone restraint with string quartet and children's choir that never oversell the sentiment.
