Recorded in 1999 and released the following summer, Contemporary Movement is a slow-motion collapse into distortion and reverb. Duster, the San Jose trio of Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber and Jason Albertini, built these twelve tracks out of four-track murk, burying guitars and drum machines under layers of tape hiss. The result sounds like slowcore fed through broken gear and left to oxidise.

Nothing here moves quickly. Get the Dutch and The Phantom Facing Me drift at a crawl, guitars smeared across the stereo field, vocals mixed so low they become another texture rather than a focal point. There is melody, but it arrives muffled, as if overheard through walls. The Breakup Suite stretches past six minutes without ever raising its voice. Punk energy shows up not in tempo but in the refusal to clean anything up or make it easy.

This is for anyone drawn to the hazy end of indie rock, where lo-fi recording becomes an aesthetic rather than a limitation. If you want Bedhead or early Codeine but hazier, or ambient music with actual songs buried inside it, this holds up.

Slowcore buried in four-track hiss and reverb, where melody arrives muffled and nothing moves quickly.
