F# A# ∞ is a three-track release built from drone, ambient and post-rock materials, with the scale of art rock but little interest in a conventional verse-chorus shape. “The Dead Flag Blues”, “East Hastings” and “Providence” make up the whole set, giving it the feel of a sustained piece rather than a collection of separate songs. The source tags also point toward Kannada devotional music, though the clearest frame here is the slow, expansive pull of drone and post-rock.
Godspeed You Black Emperor! had been active since 1994, and this 1998 release comes from the Montreal scene through the group’s own listed label. It should appeal to people who like instrumental rock that takes its time, especially fans of long-form arrangements, repeated figures and music that leaves plenty of room around each idea. Those after quick hooks or tidy endings may find it demanding. The paid release is available on CD, alongside FLAC 16/44, ALAC, WAV, AIFF and 320 kbps MP3 versions.
