Kolm's Umbra comes from Los Angeles and works with the broad, unsettled vocabulary suggested by its tags, pulling progressive rock, electronics, ambient passages and art rock into the same frame. Guitar and vocals from Giorg Yela meet Tas Limur's bass and electronics, while Mikal Baker handles drums, percussion and more electronics. It feels like a band record with plenty of room for circuitry and texture, rather than a rock album with a few synthetic touches added later.

The eight tracks use a shadowed set of titles, from “Aquarius Initiation” and “Penumbra” through “Umbra,” “Antumbra” and “Pull of the Archer,” giving the album a clear conceptual shape without needing a vocal narrative to explain it. Yela produced and mixed the record, with Nathan Harvey engineering at Bridge Family Studios and Acle Kahney handling mastering at 4D Sounds. That combination of live trio playing and studio-built detail should appeal to people who like progressive rock when it gets stranger, as well as listeners coming from experimental electronic music and ambient rock. It’s available as a paid release on CD, vinyl, and several digital formats.

Kolm’s Umbra joins progressive rock, electronics and ambient detail in an exploratory Los Angeles trio record.
