Isaac Brock's guitar scrapes against the grain throughout this double album, recorded mostly at Moon Studios with a few tracks at Avast. The production is raw but spacious, letting drums clatter and bass lines stretch across long takes that shift tempo without warning. Brock's voice swings from deadpan mutter to full-throated yell, often within the same song.

The fifteen tracks here run from two-minute bursts to sprawling seven-minute pieces built around repeating riffs that gradually accumulate layers. Fiddle appears on several cuts, adding a rural edge to the distorted guitars. Calvin Johnson's production keeps everything slightly unvarnished, emphasizing the live-room feel even on the denser arrangements. Brock's lyrics fixate on strip malls, highways, and the emptiness of western American sprawl, delivered with a mix of sarcasm and genuine desperation.

This is the record that defined a particular strain of Pacific Northwest indie rock in the late nineties, influencing countless bands who tried to replicate its combination of angular guitar work and open-road bleakness. Essential for anyone interested in American underground rock from that era, or in how guitar bands stretched song structures before emo and post-rock became codified genres.

Sprawling 1997 double album with raw guitars, shifting tempos, and lyrics about American emptiness.
