Joe Pernice's first studio album of new material under his own name is a warm, carefully arranged set of bittersweet songs. Guitars and piano carry the writing, while pedal steel, organ, strings and occasional brass give the tracks a soft pop glow without sanding down their sadness. “Peace in Our Home” has a plainspoken band feel, “Force Feed the Fire” brings in violin, viola and cello, and “Twenty-Thousand Times” adds trumpet and trombone to the mix. Pernice's melodies recall the polished songwriting of Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach and Paul Williams, though the stories remain grounded in missed chances, broken promises and people who drift out of reach.

The record comes from Pernice's Boston indie and alt-country orbit, with Kenny Luong recording and mixing most of it at The Worm Factory in Toronto. Aimee Mann joins “Deep into the Dawn,” Rodney Crowell sings on “It Won’t Be Me,” Norman Blake appears on “I’d Rather Look Away,” and Jimmy Webb contributes piano to the closing “It Got Away from Me.” That guest list gives the project a strong connection to American songcraft, but the performances stay close to Pernice's own voice. Fans of Pernice Brothers and finely written indie rock should find plenty here, especially if classic pop arrangements and low-key country detail are your thing.

Joe Pernice turns missed chances and classic pop craft into a finely arranged set of bittersweet indie rock and alt-country.
