John Tocher recorded this during a pre-dawn storm in 2012, leaving his Zoom H2 running as he drove into the rain. The piece uses field recordings from that morning and an overheard conversation looped until the phrase "you know what question I hate?" becomes pure texture. Built in AudioMulch, it layers those processed voices into drones that sit under the weather sounds and engine noise.
The result is patient and grey. Voices blur into tone. Rain becomes rhythm. It moves slowly, more interested in atmosphere than event. Tocher runs the Sadayatana podcast and co-runs the Buddhist on Fire netlabel, and that contemplative approach shows here. This is ambient music made from scraps of the everyday rather than synthesizers, close to the field recording work on labels like and/OAR or Hibernate. For people who want their ambient grounded in real spaces.
