Failure's 1996 album gets a remaster that brings out the low end and the peculiar way Ken Andrews layered guitars until they stopped sounding like guitars. This is space rock that earned the name: bass lines that rumble like distant engines, drums compressed into something between a thud and a gasp, vocals treated until they seem to come from inside a helmet. The songs move slowly, but there's always something turning over in the mix.

The band came out of Los Angeles in the early nineties, part of the same circuit that produced Tool and Hum, though Failure leaned harder into texture than riffs. Tracks like "The Nurse Who Loved Me" and "Stuck On You" became cult favourites, covered years later by bands who grew up on this record. The segues between songs aren't filler. They're part of how the album breathes, little pockets of treated noise that make the whole thing feel like one long descent.

If you want alternative rock that sounds like it was recorded in a pressurised chamber, or shoegaze with actual low frequencies, this holds up. The remaster doesn't reinvent it, just makes the original vision easier to hear.

Remastered space rock from nineties Los Angeles, all treated guitars and pressurised low end.
