death of a rabbit gathers twelve tracks from your arms are my cocoon’s long-running Chicago and Katy, Texas bedroom project. Written and recorded between December 2020 and June 2024 in bedrooms, kitchens and cars, it carries the rough edges of lo-fi pop into emo and screamo territory. The result should appeal to anyone who likes their hooks tangled up with panic, affection and a little blown-out room noise, rather than cleaned up for a studio sheen.
The drums were performed and recorded by Lobo at Slappy HQ in the Chicago suburbs, then the album was mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios. That split between scattered home recording and a dedicated drum session gives the release a useful sense of contrast, even before the titles start moving from “let’s get married” to “city in ashes” and “death of a rabbit.” There’s a clear connection to the DIY screamo and emo network around the band, with a long list of friends helping learn and play these songs live. It’s free, and its rough, affectionate presentation makes it an easy pick for fans of bedroom pop that still wants to yell.
