John Darnielle recorded All Hail West Texas on a Panasonic RX-FT500 boombox, straight to cassette, no overdubs. The fidelity is what it is: hiss, room tone, the clack of guitar strings between chords. This 2013 remaster, handled by Brent Lambert, does not try to hide that. It pulls detail from the tape without pretending the source was ever clean.

The songs are character studies set across small-town Texas, sung in Darnielle's reedy, insistent voice over strummed acoustic guitar. Some are about people who leave, some about people who stay. The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton is probably the best known, but Jenny and The Mess Inside hit harder if you are in the right mood for that kind of thing. The writing is specific enough that you remember lines years later.

This version adds six bonus tracks, including alternate takes and a song called Tape Travel Is Lonely that makes the format choice feel intentional rather than lo-fi by accident. If you already know the Mountain Goats this is the version to own. If you do not, it is still one of the clearest examples of what Darnielle does: narrative songwriting that sounds like someone talking directly to you, recorded in a way that refuses to smooth out the rough edges.

Darnielle's boombox-recorded Texas character studies, remastered without losing the tape hiss or the intimacy.

© 2013 All songs written by John Darnielle, Cadmean Dawn (ASCAP). Administered worldwide by Pacific Electric Music Publishing. Thanks to Craig Stewart for originally releasing this album and for always believing in me: without your faith and goodness this record wouldn’t exist, and neither would any of the other ones that came after it. Craig originally sent out the promos with pages from a very old Texas road atlas enclosed; only one person ever noticed or said anything about it. To the best of my knowledge none of these promos have ever been spotted in the wild, making them the most elusive piece of Mountain Goats ephemera known. Thanks to Merge for restoring this record to a place in the actual physical world, and to Brent Lambert at the Kitchen for being the mastering engineer to whom all other mastering engineers must be compared. Thanks to Alex Newport for the original tape transfer and to John Vanderslice for facilitating it. Thanks to Alyson West at Ravenhouse for navigating the channels that make this release possible. Thanks, finally, from the deepest and truest depths of my heart, to Jeff and Cyrus: for making yourselves known to me, for raising your voices, and for refusing to go down without a fight. This reissue is dedicated to Matt Fraction, because we are both still here, and who would’ve guessed it.
