Plans arrived as Death Cab for Cutie's major label debut, recorded in a Massachusetts barn with producer and guitarist Christopher Walla handling the desk. The Seattle four-piece had spent seven years refining their approach on independent releases, and here the arrangements open up: trumpet on Soul Meets Body, fuller drum sounds from Jason McGerr's Ludwig kit, Benjamin Gibbard's voice mixed higher and clearer than before.

The songs move between jangle-guitar indie rock and slower, piano-led pieces. I Will Follow You Into The Dark strips back to voice and acoustic guitar. What Sarah Said builds around keys and a lyric about hospital corridors. Marching Bands of Manhattan and Summer Skin lean on picked electric guitar and steady snare patterns. Walla's production keeps things clean without sanding off the band's melancholy edge. The playing is precise but not overthought.

This works for people who liked Death Cab's earlier records but found them thin-sounding, and for anyone after well-constructed guitar pop that does not avoid sadness. The eleven tracks run under fifty minutes. Nothing here reinvents the form, but the writing is consistent and the performances are committed.

Seattle indie rock recorded in a barn, cleaner and fuller than their earlier work without losing the melancholy.
