Aly Halpert sets Jewish liturgical texts and prayer fragments to folk-rock arrangements with guitar, mandolin, strings and light percussion. Recorded live at Germantown Jewish Centre in 2021, the album pulls from nigunim tradition but frames it through singer-songwriter structures rather than devotional repetition. Joey Weisenberg co-produced and plays bass and baritone ukulele alongside a small ensemble that includes violin, cello and a four-voice harmony section.

The music sits somewhere between contemporary folk and spiritual jazz in its approach to traditional material. Halpert wrote all the melodies and English lyrics, drawing Hebrew text from liturgy and Tanakh. Tracks like "Modah Ani" and "Ana El Na" treat ancient words as starting points for new compositions rather than strict interpretations. The live recording captures room tone and ensemble interplay without trying to smooth over the edges. Richie Barshay's percussion stays minimal, mostly hand drums and subtle accents.

This will appeal to listeners interested in how traditional Jewish music translates into indie folk idioms, and to anyone drawn to the Rising Song Institute's work in contemporary Jewish spiritual practice. The political and personal share space here without much separation. Halpert's voice is clear and direct, built for group singing as much as solo performance.

Jewish liturgical texts meet folk-rock arrangements in a live recording that treats ancient prayer as raw material for new songs.
