Josh Rouse has been making records for nearly thirty years, and Museums and Women sounds like the work of someone who no longer needs to prove anything. The songs were cut live in Nashville with Brad Jones on bass and Fred Eltringham on drums, tracked in the morning and overdubbed the same day. That looseness shows. The arrangements breathe, guitars jangle without fuss, and Rouse's voice sits right in the middle of it all, conversational and warm.

The characters here are in motion but not running. "Parnell Street" drifts through rain-soaked streets, "Sunday in the Country" leans into bossa nova, and "Spring" opens with the kind of chiming optimism that Rouse has always done well. Two tracks were produced separately in Valencia, Spain, but the seams don't show. The whole thing hangs together as a set of small stories about people passing through, looking for connection or just marking time. The title comes from a John Updike book, and the fit makes sense: everyday encounters treated with care.

Rouse co-wrote most of the songs with Jones, and the collaboration keeps things grounded. No grand statements, no reaching. If you've followed his work since Dressed Up Like Nebraska or know the Goya-winning "Do You Really Want To Be In Love," this is more of what he does best, just older and steadier.

Rouse and Brad Jones cut these character sketches live in Nashville, loose and warm, about drifters and dreamers in transit.
