Panchiko's story is strange enough on its own. A Nottingham four-piece active around the turn of the millennium, they pressed a handful of CDs that degraded badly, were rediscovered years later on a charity shop shelf, and became cult objects once someone ripped the corrupted files online. The rot became part of the sound. This collection pulls together their two early EPs, remastered for vinyl, then adds demo versions and the degraded originals as bonus material.

The music itself is indie rock from the late nineties, guitars clean and effects-heavy, drum machines doing most of the work, vocals pushed back in the mix. Laputa and Stabilisers For Big Boys have that Radiohead-adjacent melancholy without the studio budget. Deathmetal is not metal at all, just a slow build with reverb and delay. The demos are rougher, more obviously four-track. The ROT remasters preserve the digital decay from those damaged discs, which gives familiar tracks a ghosted, glitching quality that some will find essential and others will skip.

It is aimed squarely at people who care about the lore as much as the songs. If you already know why this band matters to a certain corner of the internet, you will want the vinyl. If you are coming in cold, start with the remastered tracks and decide whether the mythology adds anything.

Remastered indie rock from a Nottingham band whose degraded CDs became cult objects, plus demos and the original corrupted files.
