Salt Lake City’s Advent Horizon make progressive metal with a broad instrumental palette and a serious subject at its centre. Falling Together draws on heavy and acoustic guitars, bass and fretless bass, drums, keyboards, synthesizers, piano, organ, percussion, and several vocalists. Rylee McDonald handles vocals, guitars, keys, and percussion, while Mike Lofgreen adds drums and screams, and Grant Matheson and Kristen McDonald expand the vocal side. The result should appeal to anyone who likes their metal detailed without losing the sense of a band playing together.
The songs examine inherited beliefs and the divisions built around religion, politics, and class, but the track titles suggest a record that works through those ideas rather than turning them into a lecture. “In A Lone And Dreary World” is the largest piece here, an idea that began during the sessions for the band’s previous album before being held back and developed further. “Gravity I” and “Gravity II” point to a paired centre, while “Animals” includes background vocal ambience from Cressa and Griffin McDonald. Zach Boorman recorded and mixed the album, co-produced it, and contributed guitars, pianos, synthesizers, backing vocals, and percussion. Falling Together is a paid digital release, with FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, and 320 kbps MP3 available.
