MUNA’s self-titled third album turns synth-pop brightness into something sturdier. Katie Gavin’s vocals stay direct and elastic, while Naomi McPherson and Josette Maskin build the songs from clipped guitars, bright keyboards and clean, dance-ready production. “What I Want” has the snap of a Robyn club track, and “Anything But Me” pushes its 12/8 rhythm into glossy country-pop. “Kind Of Girl” opens out into a big, singalong chorus, while “Silk Chiffon,” featuring Phoebe Bridgers, is the obvious burst of pure pop pleasure.

The Los Angeles trio started making music together at USC, and the album carries the perspective of a band shaped by queer and minority communities without turning every feeling into a wound. There’s still uncertainty in “Home By Now” and “Runner’s High,” but the mood keeps moving toward release, friendship and the freedom to want something uncomplicated. Gavin’s writing is sharpest when the hooks feel effortless, and the production gives each chorus room to land without sanding away the nerves underneath. Anyone after polished pop with real guitars, big emotional lift and a little disco-floor shine should start here. It’s also a strong fit for fans of Robyn, Shania Twain’s pop side and The Chicks’ larger choruses.

MUNA’s 2022 self-titled album pairs bright synth-pop, sharp guitars and huge choruses with a generous dose of queer joy.
