Since 1998, Emperor X has made a habit of pulling plainspoken songwriting into stranger shapes, and Unified Field looks set to continue that line. The source tags point to a meeting of pop, folk, experimental music and techno, while the credits fill out the palette with guitars, violin, cello, percussion and layers of background vocals. Chad Matheny handles the lead vocals, lyrics, music and most instruments, with a larger group joining him across several tracks. The song titles suggest a record with plenty on its mind, from “Praise Jesus! Hail Reagan!” to “Cybertruck” and “Line Go Up Line Go Down.”
Recorded during the winter of 2025 across Ukraine, Germany, the UK and the US, with one older track made at Extrapool in Nijmegen, Unified Field has a scattered geography that fits its broad reach. Adam Lasus produced, mixed and mastered it, and Bar/None Records is issuing the paid release on vinyl, CD and digital formats. The album is dedicated to soldiers and to people grieving during the war, giving its political edge a clear human context. Fans of off-centre singer-songwriters, experimental pop and folk music with a technological streak should find plenty to investigate here, especially if guitar-led songs don't need to stay in familiar shapes.
