wolfears’ you weren’t meant to be human is a five-song release from Boston’s DIY scene, issued by ceej wolf on paid digital formats and cassette. Ceej Wolf wrote, performed, recorded and mastered the songs, working mainly with guitar and vocals. Casiotone and Moog synthesizer appear on “conception”, while NOISE ARTIFACT contributes casiotone to “all she ever wanted”. The whole set was recorded to cassette on a Panasonic RX-FT550, giving the guitar-led writing and home-recorded vocals a deliberately lo-fi frame.
The songs draw on books by Andrew Joseph White, Chuck Palahniuk and Jeff VanderMeer, alongside material about toxic relationships and dissociative identity disorder. Those subjects sit beside blunt, loaded titles such as “he loves me” and “sorry mom, sorry god”, with the title track placed right in the middle of the sequence. There’s a clear pull toward emo, folk and art rock here, but the small setup keeps the focus on Ceej’s songwriting rather than arrangement. Fans of handmade singer-songwriter records, queer DIY releases and cassette-recorded alternative music will know what to expect, though the intimate subject matter may be the bigger draw than polish.
