Faye Webster's fifth album finds her in a familiar spot: singing low and slow about heartbreak, boredom, and the weird little moments in between. She wrote the title after buying last-minute tickets to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra just to disappear into a crowd of strangers. That impulse runs through the whole record. She wants company but not closeness, comfort but not commitment. On "But Not Kiss" she sings about sleeping in someone's arms then pulls back. It is a whole dynamic in one line.
The band recorded everything live at Sonic Ranch in Texas. Pedal steel from Matt Stoessel and guitar from Wilco's Nels Cline give the songs room to breathe. Lil Yachty shows up on "Lego Ring" with a ghostly vocal that floats underneath hers. They have been friends since middle school and it sounds like it. There is a 90-second autotuned song about feeling good today and buying something dumb. There is a song called "eBay Purchase History." She is not reaching for profundity. She is just living and writing it down.
This is for people who like bedroom pop that leans country, or indie rock that does not rush. If you already know her 2021 album I Know I'm Funny haha you will recognize the territory. If you do not, start with "Lifetime" and see if the space between the notes holds you.
