Horror Vacui have been at this since 1994, and Shadows Sanctuary sounds like a band that knows exactly what it's doing. The Bologna group work a deathrock template, driving bass, skeletal guitars, vocals that sit somewhere between deadpan and desperate, but they've tightened it into something direct and purposeful. There's no fat on these tracks. "Distressed" and "Midnight" hit hard, the rhythm section locked in and relentless, while "A Sunny Day" pulls back just enough to let the guitars breathe before the next wave hits.

The album frames darkness as refuge rather than threat, which suits the sound. These aren't songs about wallowing. They move. "Skyless Eyes" and "Another Sleepless Night" churn through themes of isolation and identity without getting precious about it. The production is clean but not polished, guitars cutting through without drowning the bass. It's the kind of record that rewards turning up loud.

For anyone who's spent time with early Christian Death or the sharper end of post-punk, this will feel familiar without feeling redundant. Horror Vacui aren't reinventing anything here, but they're doing it well. Available on vinyl, CD and the usual digital formats.

Bologna deathrock veterans deliver ten tracks of skeletal guitars and relentless bass that frame darkness as refuge.
